brief
World heritage site Derby Industrial Museum requested me to design a museum guide as a vehicle to engage, excite, entertain and educate visitors about their vast collection of early Rolls Royce aircraft engines and their history within the engineering industry.
The visual tool must highlight the importance of science, maths, technology, engineering and art within aviation and how these disciplines are connected to the principles of flight.
OUTCOME
I carried out a lot of research in to technical drawings and plans from Rolls Royce’s early aircraft engines and noticed that carbon paper was frequently used as a drawing material. I really liked the slightly organic effect of the carbon paper so I decided to use this technique for the illustrations and exploded diagrams within the museum guide.
I used annotations to define and describe aspects of the design. They are paired with numbered labels on the design itself to visually map each description to the relevant part of the design.
The finished guide was really visual, fun and memorable and was well received by visitors of all ages to the museum.
